The Colts have a better regular season record. So how is it decided that San Diego will host the playoff game this year in 2008?

The division winner gets the home field during the first round of the playoffs, so by virtue of winning the AFC West division, the Chargers get the home-field advantage.

Usually in the playoffs, regardless of home field, the better team will win the game, so I personally look for the Colts to win the game.

This happened last year, too, by the way, when the wild card Jacksonville Jaguars, with an 11-5 record, had to go into Pittsburgh and play the Steelers, the division winners with a 10-6 record. Jacksonville won that game.

But a wild card team, which the Colts are this year, can NEVER get a home game in the playoffs, except in the unlikely event that both wild card teams advance to the conference championship game, in which case the higher ranked wild card team (in this case the Colts) would get the home field advantage – so if we have a Baltimore/Indianapolis AFC championship game it will be in Indy.
