What intersection going into downtown San Diego has the worse traffic?
I am actually just doing some research for a book I’m writing that takes place in San Diego. Anyone who knows this is also welcome to answer both parts… during morning rush hour about how long would it take to get from Mira Mesa to downtown San Diego? Any answers to both or either one of those questions is greatly appreciated!
Joe C. is correct.
I’m just putting in my two-cents here and suggesting using the intersection of Mission Bay Drive and Balboa Avenue. I think it’s the busiest intersection in San Diego. It backs up the I-5 traffic for miles during the evening commute.
Under perfect conditions it’s a 20 minute drive from Mira Mesa to Broadway downtown. In reality count on 30-45 minutes or more at rush hours.

West Laurel St and Kettner Blvd, right before Pacific Highway is pretty bad. A lot of traffic is exiting the freeway, heading for the airport and there is a railroad / trolley crossing on Laruel that backs things up.
In downtown itself, anything along Broadway is pretty bad, especially around the courthouse. You have a lot of people late for jury duty who don’t know where they are going and don’t know where to park. Broadway by Horton Plaza is also bad.
