San Diego hotels – recommend any good ones?
It all depends on what you're looking for!
I was in charge of finding a place for a family reunion with people of all ages coming from 3 states…no pressure!
After tons of internet research, I decided on San Diego (I'm from there and we live in OC.)
We all spent a week at Loews Coronado Beach Resort. Everyone loved it. A few amenities are: short walk to the beach, bike, surrey and boat rental right there on the property, valet or self-park, great restaurants at the hotel, lobby bar with fireplace, small grocery store, luxurious spa on property, 24 hour room service, work-out room, live music on weekends, Sunday brunch, 4 pools/jacuzzis, short drive to downtown Coronado, great concierge desk where you can buy discounted tickets to Sea World, the S.D. Zoo and more…etc. My husband even surprised me with a romantic gondola ride through the Coronado Cays on our last night.
Good luck and I hope this helps!

You can't go wrong with hanging out in the Gaslamp district in downtown San Diego.

The Marriott is pretty nice but there are a variety of hotels in the area to choose from.
Also the Gaslamp is a neat hang out with lots of shops, eateries and bars.
Also check out the Hotel Del Coronado across the bridge in Coronado. A must see!

As far as what's good, consider the classics, like the US Grant. Other good options are practically any of the beach hotels in La Jolla, like The Sea Lodge, which is in a fantastic spot on La Jolla Shores, but be prepared to PAY. As for the US Grant, it's Downtown, beautifully appointed, and easy to get to places you'll want to probably go.
Here's an idea if you're willing to accept not being in the city center – go on Priceline and choose Carlsbad with a 2 1/2 star minimum. Most of the very good hotels in the center of San Diego run well beyond $120-150 a night (even motel 6 tends to be in the $70's) and more.
Why Carlsbad? There's a glut of middle and upper-middle level lodging in the area. Legoland and the surrounding business parks caused what became an excessive development of lodging near I-5. You can get a couple nights at an "extended-stay" style place for about $70-90. . . TOTAL!
Simply bid $35 or so per night. You might be surprised.
(It's a Hampton inn/Courtyard type facility)
No lie, it really worked, and this was for a summer weekend, no less. The extra 30 miles of driving or "Coaster" train riding to San Diego you'll have to make still doesn't dent the savings you get all that much.
Granted, you don't get to choose your hotel, but the quality of room is going to be at least at a very good level.

I stayed in the Embassy suites. Their breakfast can't be beat. It's located across from the USS Midway in San Diego Harbor. It's right around the corner from the gaslamp district.

San Diego hotels have a very wide selection in quality and price. I found some very good deals and a website devoted to San Diego vacation activities.
You can visit it at:

If you don't live by the coast, I'd definitely recommend staying at a hotel on the beach. You can find great beach hotels in La Jolla, Coronado, Pacific Beach, and Mission Bay. If you can afford it, Hotel Del Coronado is an historic hotel with a great location. My other favorite choice is Pacific Terrace …a small boutique style hotel right on the beach in Pacific Beach. They have great service and a complimentary breakfast.
