Local 29 runs the waterfront in San Diego and it's not an easy place to break in to. I worked for a couple of years unloading cars at 28th St and I only got in because I knew someone who was already there.

Don't plan on going to work and making lots of money right away. It's long, hard work (when it's available), the big money guys have been there a long, long time and you have to work extra hard to prove yourself, and even then there's no guarantees.

But if you're really interested start here:

Whoa.... good luck...
This is a job that you either are lucky to get due to a family member or just plain good timing.
I would start down at the docks doing anything they want and working yourself up to this.
We use to tie up our company tugs ourselves in Hawaii and the longshoremen came down heavy on us. We were non union .. We eventually let them do it... Why? They would put their babies on the tires of the docks so we couldn't tie up or they would hinder us in other ways.
Start with getting in the union.. Then take it from there.
Someday if you are lucky and are well liked or do great work you may get a job with them..
References :
been there
