San Diego area beach: Coronado or Carlsbad beaches or….?

San Diego Beaches
My son (11yo) and myself are looking for a San Diego area beach to hang out and skimboard and possibly boogieboard while the wife subathes and reads. Were coming over from Phoenix. Basically whats the best beach to hang out at late July that will be the less crowded and good for skimboarding? Were amateurs so big waves aren’t a must. I don’t want a beach where surfers own the wave every 10 feet. Also beaches that are sandy and not rocky. Our main goal is the beach so shops and luxery means nothing. Thanks
Coronado might be packed, but that is because it is one of the best beaches in the country.

I think you should go to Coronado because it is one of the best beaches in the U.S.A.
PS. It is very crowded.

There are lots of great beaches in San Diego. I’d probably recommend Torrey Pines in midsummer. It’s a beautiful beach. There will be people there, but it’s not usually as crowded as some of the other beaches. Torrey Pines Reserve is right next door with fun hiking trails.
